The Kuwait Cancer Center Project represents a critical step forward in the Ministry of Health’s long-term strategy for national healthcare development. The hospital campus is being developed to satisfy the Ministry’s civic aspirations and their objective to develop state-of-the-art healthcare facilities for the people of Kuwait. An important aspect of healthcare sustainability includes providing places of respite for patients and staff, and this is particularly important for those battling cancer. The open space network envisioned for the site includes courtyards adjacent to atrium spaces allowing for exterior areas to directly contribute to the healing qualities of the interior spaces of the hospital. In addition, these vegetative areas provide shade and comfort to patients and staff in order to help them connect with nature and expose themselves to its healing qualities helping to reduce stress. Green roofs are also introduced to the architecture to provide visual opportunities for patients and staff to connect with natural elements and daylight. To meet the goal of providing a preeminent cancer facility that builds the Ministry of Health as a leader in cancer treatment, grand entries and spatial sequences were explored to help enhance the overall experience. Accommodations were also made for the inclusion of the family in the healing process, recognizing and providing for the unique needs pertaining to cancer patients. This hospitality oriented facility promotes a high-level of care in design with clear and concise circulation systems, wayfinding, and organization. The prioritization of human comfort helps create a hopeful and harmonious healing landscape that is environmentally responsive, sustainable, resilient through time, and socially and culturally diverse.
